The city of Montreux, Switzerland, is one that is full of rich history, breathtaking architecture, and most importantly one of the greatest music inspirations in the world. Every
July since 1967, Montreux has hosted a global phenomenon known as the Montreux Jazz Festival. As the second largest annual music festival in the world, the Montreux Jazz Festival has
attracted some of the greatest musicians to take part and perform for over 200,000 visitors each year. The long list of brilliant artists that have performed on stage at MJF includes
Santana, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Black Eyed Peas, Eric Clapton, Sting, Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Talib Kweli, and Audioslave to name just a few. This rich mixture of musical styles and
creative minds has led to several enduring moments that have changed the history of music itself. The festival was originally held at the old Montreux Casino, which burned down in
December 1971 during Frank Zappa's performance. ("Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple tells that story.) The festival was held then in other auditoriums in Montreux, until it could
return to the rebuilt new Casino in 1975. As momentous as the Montreux Jazz Festival has been, it's not the only landmark of music history in this invigorating city.
Montreux is the home of Mountain Studios, the recording studio used by several artists. "Bonzo's Montreux" by Led Zeppelin is named after the city
where the drums session of John Bonham was recorded in 1976. In 1978, the band Queen bought the studio. It was then sold to Queen producer David Richards. In 2002, the Mountain Studios
was
converted into a bar as part of a complete renovation of the studio. Queen also appeared in 1984 and in 1986 at the Golden Rose Festival and Queen guitarist Brian May appeared in
2001 at the Jazz Festival. Montreux was also the subject of the 1995 Queen single "A Winter's Tale" on the album Made in Heaven, one of Freddie's last songs before his death on November
24, 1991. The album cover features the statue of Mercury beside the lake.
